Etisalat announces major network upgrade

Dhs4 billion plan to improve services

One thing you can’t accuse the mobile networks of here in Abu Dhabi, is resting on their laurels.

It seems like every month there’s a new speed, piece of tech or deal available from either du, Etisalat or Virgin.

The latest news from Etisalat is about a Dhs4 billion network upgrade.

Dr. Ahmed bin Ali, Senior Vice President corporate communication, says: “The upgrade will cover the company’s mobile phone and fiber optic networks, along with infrastructure development as well as Etisalat’s G5 network.

“Etisalat embarked on its 5G journey in 2014 and last year the first commercial 5G wireless network in the UAE was launched with speeds as much as 20 times faster than 4G.”

He was speaking at a technology roadshow in Abu Dhabi hosted by Etisalat in cooperation with Ericsson, which showcased emerging 5G, Internet of Things trends, updated technologies, Artificial Intelligence and automation.

One of the latest technologies on display was MusiConnect, which enables musicians to play along with each other remotely, meaning they can perform and practice together, despite being in different places.

Saeed Al Zarouni, senior vice president, mobile network at Etisalat, adds: “5G is now a reality due to Etisalat’s continuous efforts in building and investing in future networks to enable innovation, and accelerating digital transformation.”

Who knows where the future will take us? Exciting places if this is anything to go by.
