Abu Dhabi government issues reminder about fines for mistreating pets

Sanctions of up to Dhs10,000 for being cruel to animals

Abu Dhabi Municipality have reminded pet owners to care for their animals properly this summer.

The announcement comes after a new online portal was launched where animal cruelty can be reported.

A number of fines are in place for violations for those who fail to provide the appropriate care for animals.

Abandoning any pet on the street is punishable by a Dhs2,000 fine and failing to keep your dog on a leash in public will result in a Dhs5,000 fine.

Additionally, businesses selling protected species will be fined Dhs10,000 and pet shops that sell sick animals will be fined Dhs3,000.

The awareness campaign aims to reduce the number of animals abandoned in the UAE each year and ensure that all animals in the capital receive an acceptable level of care and protection.

New regulations were launched last year on pet ownership and healthcare that ensures owners must attain registration certificates for the acquisition, possession and accommodation of animals.

As part of the new regulations it is illegal for residents to keep animals other than cats and dogs in villas and apartments without a municipality permit.

Those who violate these rules face a fine of Dhs5,000.
