Islamic New Year to fall on Saturday August 31 in the UAE

Government department says normal working hours will resume on Sunday

Hirji New Year will fall on August 31 2019.

The Federal Authority for Human Resources (FAHR) announced tonight (Friday August 30) that Islamic New Year will fall on Saturday and not Sunday.

Many public and private sector employees have been waiting on the announcement anticipating a long weekend with Sunday being a public holiday.

The moon sighting comittee have confirmed that Hirji New Year will fall on Saturday, which will be a public holiday, meaning that employees will return to work as normal on Sunday.

FAHR announced that “regular working hours will be resumed on Sunday September 1”. It had seemed like Sunday would be the holiday following insight from astrologers, but it is not to be.

The good news is there are more public holidays to be observed before the end of 2019.

Earlier this year the UAE Cabinet announced that in 2019 and 2020 the public and private sectors would get the same holidays.

Planning ahead for the rest of the year?

Here’s a provisional list of the country’s remaining public holidays for 2019 so you know what to look out for.

Sunday December 1: UAE Commemoration Day
Monday December 2-Tuesday December 3: UAE National Day

Happy New Year!
