See an incredible 3D sculpture at Expo 2020 Dubai

You can find it at Terra, the Sustainability Pavilion

Love art, design, and the environment? You’re going to love the latest sculpture that’s been unveiled for Expo 2020 Dubai.

Celebrated British artist Mat Collishaw was commissioned by Expo 2020 Dubai to create a memorable, thought-stimulating sculpture for Terra – the Sustainability Pavilion.

Equinox is an animated sculpture that harnesses zoetrope technology, an early form of animation, to create an optical illusion that you don’t want to miss.

The centre of the sculpture is a giant lotus flower with an orbit of insects, spinning on a vertical axis. The petals act as shutters, animating the insects so that they appear to fly, eat and pollinate.

The petals create a chalice that conserves insect ecology, emphasising the importance of protecting and conserving insect life.

Accompanying the work is a selection of poems that praise the sanctity of nature, including some by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and celebrated English poet and painter William Blake.

The installation is a poetic commentary on the delicacy of the earth’s ecosystems.

Collishaw said: “My work engages with subject matter that involves an engagement with how we as humans navigate the world and the choices we make.

“The sustainability theme of Terra provided a context, literally and metaphorically, for an experience that invites contemplation and reflection on the precarious nature of the earth’s ecosystem.”
