Kate Bush claims ‘the world has gone mad’ after Stranger Things put her back to the top of the charts.
The elusive singer discussed the use of her track ‘Running Up That Hill’ on the Netflix sci-fi series in a rare UK interview.
Originally released in 1985, the song is used as a key plot device in a climactic showdown between Sadie Sink’s Max and the sinister Vecna.
Since its inclusion in Stranger Things, ‘Running Up That Hill’ has soared to the top of the charts in the UK and is set to remain there for a second week – fighting off competition from music heavyweights Beyoncé and Drake.
In America, it re-entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number eight, becoming Bush’s highest charting single in the US to date.
Speaking on BBC Radio 4, Bush said: ‘It’s just extraordinary… quite shocking really, isn’t it? I mean, the whole world’s gone mad.’
‘It’s such a great series,’ she added. ‘I thought that the track would get some attention. But I just never imagined that it would be anything like this.’
‘The Duffer brothers created the series and actually we watched it from the first series onwards, so I was already familiar with the series. And I thought what a lovely way for the song to be used in such a positive way. You know, as a kind of talisman for Max.’
Stranger Things co-creator Matt Duffer has previously confirmed that there will be more of Kate Bush’s music in the climactic two episodes of season four, streaming on July 1.
He described the upcoming scenes as ‘arguably the most epic Kate Bush moment. It comes back in a major way.’
