See this year’s final supermoon in Abu Dhabi this week

This will be the final time you can gaze up at a supermoon in 2022

Dust off your telescope as the final supermoon of 2022 is approaching.

If stargazing is a pastime you are fond of then mark your calendar for Thursday August 11 as the last supermoon of the year will be visible in the Abu Dhabi night sky.

The large moon, which is referred to as the Sturgeon Moon, will be visible to the naked eye, so there is no need to fret if you don’t own stargazing gear.

Named after the sturgeon fish caught during this time of year, the August supermoon is the fourth and final supermoon of 2022.

Not just any moon can be called a supermoon. According to NASA, supermoons happen when a full moon coincides with the Moon’s closest approach to Earth in its elliptical orbit, a point known as perigee.

A supermoon appears larger and brighter than other full moons so expect the city to be flooded with bright moonlight.

In July, the Abu Dhabi skyline was illuminated by the year’s biggest supermoon.

Silver light flooded the city as the supermoon, referred to as the Buck Moon, was wholly visible to the naked eye.
