Tesla Model 3 joins Dubai Taxi fleet

Fully electric vehicles will soon be whizzing around the city

Dubai’s government-owned taxi fleet will soon boast a line-up of electric motors.

Over the weekend the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) shared the announcement that a fleet of Tesla Model 3 saloons will soon be able to available to hail.

Though it was not revealed how many of the eco-friendly cars will be on the road as part of the launch.

Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors, RTA, explained that the rollout of the fleet has come following the success of a trial period that started in 2017.

The trial saw RTA operating 172 Tesla vehicles as part of their limousine fleet.

“The success of that experiment prompts us to widen the scope of using electric vehicles as part of the Dubai Taxi fleet over the upcoming years. It supports the initiative of converting 90 per cent of the limo fleet in Dubai into eco-friendly vehicles (hybrid/electric) by 2026. The initiative is the first of its kind worldwide in adopting a semi-total transformation of limousines into environmentally-friendly vehicles,” Mattar Al Tayer shared.

Last year, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) penned a deal that will see General Motors-Cruise roll out self-steering vehicles on Dubai’s roads.

It was also announced that a company named Cruise will provide a taxi and electronic reservation service for passengers.

The aim is to have 25 percent of all trips in Dubai completed via driverless modes of transportation by 2030.

So if you’re visiting Dubai, you’re pretty much stepping into the future.
