Here’s how UAE residents can help children and families in Beirut

The Big Beirut Relief Challenge is happening this week

UAE-registered non-profit organisation Gulf for Good has partnered up with the Lebanon Mountain Trail Association for The Virtual Big Beirut Relief Challenge, and now UAE residents can help those affected by the explosions in Beirut in August.

The virtual hiking challenge is running until Saturday September 26 and avid trekkers can virtually hike a 59.2km trail to raise funds for the Lebanese Red Cross.

In response to the explosion, the Lebanese Red Cross is providing emergency shelter for 1,000 families and the organisation is hoping to provide shelter for as many as 10,000 families in the coming months.

Food, water, hygiene kits, masks, gloves and other essentials are also being distributed to vulnerable families in need.

Trained team members are also providing crisis counselling to the community, and for family members that have been separated by this event, the Red Cross Restoring Family Links program is reconnecting families.

Hikers will have the opportunity to virtually trek through the beautiful hiking trails of Lebanon, and all while raising funds for the charity.

“We were appalled by the catastrophic explosion in Beirut in August and felt compelled to help. We are delighted to partner with the Lebanon Mountain Trail Association in this charity challenge, inviting participants from around the world to take part virtually by completing the 59.2km hike in eight days,” said Anne Edmondson, Chairwoman of Gulf for Good.

“We are deeply inspired by this creative solution which is providing a platform allowing people to virtually hike the Lebanon Mountain Trail from anywhere in the world and raise funds in support of Lebanon, and at a time when lockdowns and social distancing have made real time events impossible,” said Helene Abi Assi, Communication Coordinator of the Lebanon Mountain Trail Association.

As this is a virtual initiative, participants can sign up from anywhere around the world by clicking on this link.
