Tried & tested: Zayna Spa

De-stress with a Signature Massage at Zen the spa at Beach Rotana Hotel

The promise
The knowledge and skills of the therapist are fully utilised in this thorough massage that uses a multitude of techniques to relax your muscles, mind and body as well as improving your circulation.

Step-by-step
After changing into the standard disposable underwear, slippers and robe, we are taken to the small but delightful treatment room and asked the usual questions about any particular concerns we have, problem
areas and our preferences for the strength of the massage. Our therapist explains that the oil she will be using is a mix of lavender and peppermint in order to be simultaneously relaxing but still awaken the mind. The massage begins with us lying on our front and involves a number of different massage techniques all in the same treatment. From long, firm strokes to pressure point stimulation and bending and stretching limbs – the full spectrum of muscle manipulation is covered. Flipping over onto our backs so that our limbs can be thoroughly pummelled from all sides, the treatment is finished off with a neck and head massage that quickly, and embarrassingly, sends us to sleep.

The results
We are left largely feeling like we’re floating on air and with a rather embarrassing amount of drool on our chin from when we fell asleep. The multiple techniques and length of time the massage takes ensure that no knot or sore point is left untouched and it certainly worked to get a lot of our long-standing kinks out.

Pros
Aside from thoroughly ridding the body of knots and tension, it is very interesting to experience the different types of massage. Some are more pleasant than others and it is a great way to see what you like and what you don’t. It is incredibly relaxing, and great for people who live or work downtown.

Cons
Some of the techniques can be a little uncomfortable, but if you tell the therapist that you aren’t happy she will resolve the issue immediately. Zen the Spa isn’t one of the newer spas in the city, and some of the facilities (such as the changing/preparation area) might not be as sophisticated as others around town.
