Yoga styles explained

Rowena Karaman from Ignite Fitness & Wellness explains yoga styles

Ashtanga
This is perhaps the most physically demanding form of yoga. It’s based on set sequences, typically performed for 90 minutes, six times a week. Ashtanga is not for the faint-hearted, yet it’s perfect for those wanting to instil a sense of discipline and precision.

Bikram
It focuses on a set 26 postures performed in 40°C heat. The warmth of the room can prevent injury, deepen your practise, increase the detoxifying effect within the body and help focus your mind on breathing, keeping you firmly in the moment.

Hatha
This is the name given to any form of physical yoga. The class works its way through individual asanas or postures while strengthening and stretching the whole body, giving enough time to experience each position without having to rush into your next pose.

Iyengar
If you like detail and precision, this one is for you. It uses many props such as belts and blocks to help you stay in the correct alignment, so you feel the benefit of true form regardless of your flexibility or experience. The more you practise, the less you’ll need to rely on the props.

Vinyasa
Like ashtanga, this is a physically demanding form of yoga, yet it has more variation. Classes are made up of different flow sequences, focusing on transitions into asanas. Once again, it’s perfect for those who want to increase their physical strength and get a sweat on.
