With less than 100 days to go until the tournament

With less than 100 days to go until the tournament kicks off on November 20, excitement is through the roof across the city.

Lusail Stadium has held its first match, the Supreme Committee has unveiled its entertainment plans, and everyone is ready to go – which is why we thought it was the perfect time to run you through all of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 stadiums.

From the host of the first match between Qatar and Ecuador to the final match where one team will be crowned champion, here’s everything you need to know about the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 stadiums.

FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 stadiums: A guide

Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium

FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 stadiums: Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium

Capacity: 40,000.
Location: Next to the Mall of Qatar.
Nearest metro station: Al Riffa-Mall of Qatar (green line), which is a five-minute walk from the station.
Inauguration: December 18, 2020, during the 2020 Amir Cup final.

Located in Al Rayyan, one of Qatar’s most traditional cities, Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium has been designed to reflect Qatari culture.

Its façade is made up of patterns that are meant to symbolise different aspects of the culture, including native flora and fauna, the beauty of the desert, and the importance of family.

During the tournament, this FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 stadium will host seven matches up until the round of 16.

After Qatar 2022 is over, the capacity will be reduced to 20,000 fans, and Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium will become the home of Al Rayyan Sports Club.

Al Bayt Stadium

FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 stadiums: Al Bayt Stadium

Capacity: 60,000.
Location: Near Al Khor.
Nearest metro station: Lusail Metro Station (red line). A shuttle bus will run between the station and Al Bayt Stadium, and should take around 25 minutes.
Inauguration: November 30, 2021, during the opening match of the FIFA Arab Cup.

Set to host the first match of the tournament between Qatar and Ecuador on November 20, Al Bayt Stadium is the perfect venue to introduce visitors to Qatari culture.

Its shape is meant to resemble the bayt al sha’ar – tents traditional used by Bedouins across the Gulf region – and is also where the stadium gets its name from.

During the tournament, Al Bayt Stadium will host nine matches, including one of the semi-finals.

There are big plans for this FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 stadium after the final whistle, with capacity reduced to 32,000.

The upper part of the stadium will be transformed into a five-star hotel, while a shopping centre, food court, gym and multipurpose hall will also be built around the building.

Al Janoub Stadium

Capacity: 40,000.
Location: Al Wakrah.
Nearest metro station: Al Wakrah Metro Station (red line). A shuttle bus will run between the station and the stadium, and should take around 15 minutes.
Inauguration: May 16, 2019, during the Amir Cup final.

Arguably the most recognisable of all the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 stadiums, Al Janoub Stadium was designed by the late Zaha Hadid.

In tribute to Al Wakrah’s seafaring past, the design is meant to resemble the sails of traditional dhow boats.

That’s not the only impressive part to Al Janoub Stadium – it also uses an innovative cooling system, with under-seat ventilators to keep spectator areas at a cool 18C.

The stadium’s roof can also retract, and will provide much-needed shade throughout matches held during the hotter months.

During the tournament, Al Janoub Stadium will seven matches, up to the round of 16.

Post-Qatar 2022, the capacity will be reduced to 20,000, and will become home to Al Wakrah Sports Club.

Al Thumama Stadium

Capacity: 40,000.
Location: Al Thumama.
Nearest metro station: Free Zone Metro Station (red line). A shuttle bus will run between the station and the stadium, and should take around 15 minutes.
Inauguration: October 22, 2021, during the Amir Cup final.

Another FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 stadium that represents Qatari culture, Al Thumama Stadium is meant to resemble a gahfiya, a traditional woven cap worn across the region.

During the tournament, Al Thumama Stadium will host eight matches, up until the quarter finals.

After the final whistle, capacity will be reduced to 20,000, and a boutique hotel will open in the stadium’s upper stands.

The area around the stadium will be transformed into a community hub, with running and cycling tracks plus facilities for sports including volleyball, basketball and swimming.

Education City Stadium

FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 stadiums: Education City Stadium

Capacity: 40,000.
Location: Education City.
Nearest metro station: Education City Metro Stadium (green line), which is a five-minute walk from the station.
Inauguration: June 15, 2020, with a virtual event paying tribute to frontline workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

As you might have guessed from the name, this FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 stadium is located in an area filled with leading university campuses.

The façade is made up of diamond-like geometric patterns, and is meant to represent quality, durability and resilience.

During the tournament, Education City Stadium will host eight matches, up to the quarter finals.

Its capacity will be reduced in half, with these seats donated to a country lacking in sporting infrastructure.

The stadium is set to become a sporting hub, with the precinct already playing host to the Qatar Masters in 2020 at the Education City Golf Club.

Khalifa International Stadium

Capacity: 40,000.
Location: Aspire Zone.
Nearest metro station: Sports City Metro Station (gold line), which is a five-minute walk from Khalifa International Stadium.
Inauguration: May 19, 2017, during the Amir Cup final.

Originally built in 1976, Khalifa International Stadium is the only FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 stadium not built from scratch for the tournament, undergoing extensive renovations before reopening in 2017.

It is Qatar’s national stadium, and is also home to the 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum.

The venue’s precinct is also home to Aspire Dome, Hamad Aquatics Centre, Aspire Park and The Torch hotel.

During the tournament, it will host eight matches, including the third place play-off.

Lusail Stadium

FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 stadiums: Lusail Stadium

Capacity: 80,000.
Location: Lusail.
Nearest metro station: Lusail QNB Metro Station (red line), which is a five-minute walk from the stadium.
Inauguration: August 11, 2022, with a Qatar Stars League match between Al Rayyan and Al Arabi. It is also set to host the Lusail Super Cup in September.

Set to host the Qatar 2022 final, billions of fans will tune in to see the match at Lusail Stadium on December 18.

This golden venue is designed to look like a fanar lantern, and both its shape and façade are meant to echo the intricate decorative motifs traditionally found on bowls across the Arab and Islamic world.

During the tournament, it will host ten matches.

Plans for this FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 stadium after the tournament are yet to be finalised, but could include affordable housing units, shops, food outlets and even a school.

Stadium 974

FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 stadiums: Stadium 974

Capacity: 40,000.
Location: Ras Abu Abboud.
Nearest metro station: Ras Bu Abboud Metro Station (gold line), which is a 20-minute walk from the stadium.
Inauguration: November, 20, 2021, with a digital launch event. It hosted its first match on November 30, on the opening day of the 2021 FIFA Arab Cup.

Made entirely out of shipping containers – 974 of them, in a nod to Qatar’s international dialing code – Stadium 974 is the first ever fully demountable tournament venue in World Cup history.

During the tournament, it will host seven matches, up to the round of 16.

After the final match, it will be completely dismantled and turned into a waterfront development for residents to enjoy.
