The Hero Project: Radiology Department, King’s College Hospital Dubai

Frontliners work as a team to evolve procedures amid challenges of pandemic

In April 2020, Arabian Business and Time Out launched The Hero Project, in a bid to raise the profiles of the thousands of individuals and companies in the UAE making huge efforts to overcome the Covid-19 crisis.

The project allows members of the public to nominate any person, company or organisation in the UAE who they believe deserves recognition during the current pandemic.

King’s College Hospital Dubai’s Radiology department is one of these nominees.

The radiology department of King’s College Hospital Dubai has been at the forefront of the UAE’s fight against the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic – and it’s kept them busy.

“We are frontline workers. Doctors cannot diagnose Covid-19 cases without radiology services and reports,” says Shagufta Nadeem Muhammad Hassam, a member of the team. “It’s been so far so good. We are trying our best to give quality services to our patients.”

It hasn’t been easy. The team – with 20 members from various nationalities – has had to change the way they work as a result of the pandemic. They must now take strict precautions set forth by the Dubai Health Authority to ensure the safety of their colleagues and help combat the spread of Covid-19.

“Particularly in [Covid-19] cases which are admitted, we need to perform portable X-rays in order to avoid the patient coming to our department, as well as to follow safety precautionary measures,” Hassam added.

Even in difficult moments, the team has managed to pull through as a unit.

“We all depend on each other, from our admin team to our radiologists. All are vital components of our team,” Hassam adds. “We all work as a team, as a family.”

When asked what motivates the team, Hassam responds without hesitation.

“Our aim is to save humanity,”
