The Hero Project: Dr Wael Faroug Elamin at Kings College Hospital Dubai

Consultant medical microbiologist and infection control specialist at Kings College Hospital Dubai earning praise from colleagues and patients alike

In April 2020, Arabian Business and Time Out launched The Hero Project, in a bid to raise the profiles of the thousands of individuals and companies in the UAE making huge efforts to overcome the Covid-19 crisis.

The project allows members of the public to nominate any person, company or organisation in the UAE who they believe deserves recognition during the current pandemic.

Dr Wael Faroug Elamin is one of these nominees.

Among the crisis of coronavirus there has been a consistent air of calm in the shape of Dr Wael Faroug Elamin, consultant medical microbiologist and infection control specialist at Kings College Hospital Dubai.

“He has worked every day since we started preparing for our first coronavirus patient, he has always been on call 24/7, wanting to be at the heart of his patients treatments. He is never ‘off duty’,” said colleague Natalie Oakes.

A veteran of the prestigious Bart’s Health hospital, Broomfield Hospital and the St Andrews Burns and Plastics Hospital, in the UK, Dr Elamin has also played a pivotal role during conflict.

This, however, is a completely different fight and it is his overwhelming calm in the face of adversity, as well as his experience and professionalism, that is winning him the hearts and minds of colleagues and patients alike.

Oakes explained: “Even when not in the frontline with his patients, he is there for his colleagues and their families offering them advice.
“He appears on national radio at least once a week, being there to offer support for the public.

“His patients always send letters of thanks, flood him with calls, and are forever grateful for the time, care and compassion he offers.”
