One of the main success stories during the Covid-19 pandemic is how many tests the UAE has been able to carry out.
The numbers have reached as high as 50,000 per day and are regularly around the 30,000 mark.
That has been possible thanks to people like Laila Abdulwareh, a clinical pathologist and deputy CEO and chief scientific officer at the National Reference Laboratory (NRL), which has centres in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and the Northern Emirates.
From the start of the pandemic reaching the UAE, Abdulwareh has been at the forefront of testing.
She facilitated the tests from Cleveland Clinic to be carried out at NRL, quickly building up the capacity to test around 3,000 people per day, with results ready in 24 hours.
Colleagues say: “She has been working tirelessly at the hospital to provide timely and quality results for our front-liners.”
