Harley-Davidson owners in Abu Dhabi

We meet the motorbike association riders who really like to hear their rides roar

The nation’s capital is full of clubs for different people from all walks of life. One such organisation is the Abu Dhabi chapter of the Harley-Davidson Owner’s Group; for bikers who like their rides to really roar.

If you’ve ever found yourself startled by the low grumbling spit and growl of a powerful motorbike exhaust while strolling along the capital’s streets, chances are you’re in the vicinity of the Harley-Davidson Owner’s Group (aka HOG). Although the UAE might not strike many as a natural home for dirty leathers, bandanas and two-wheel mechanical beasts there are plenty of people here who love nothing more than hitting the open road on their trusty steeds. We met Yasser Al Hweety (director of HOG) to find out more.

How did the Abu Dhabi Chapter get started?
Since 1989, Harley-Davidson of the UAE has been operational, and we are proud to say this was the first Harley-Davidson dealership to start in the GCC region. Motorcycle ownership gradually became popular at that time which increased the number of riders in the country. As the dealership grew so did their number of friends and customers. They decided it was time to formalise their group into a local HOG Chapter, gaining recognition and organisation for their riding events and social activities. The Chapter was formed on October 1 1997 and was named Arabian Gulf Abu Dhabi UAE Chapter.

What were some of the challenges in the beginning?
HOG is a group of diverse people sharing one passion: riding Harley-Davidson bikes. We have members from different nations with different cultural backgrounds. The challenge was to organise our activities where all these members could have fun together. We have overcome this challenge and now we organise trips, outings, participate in charity events and the atmosphere is very friendly and courteous.

How many members are there currently in the Chapter?
Around 300 members, 15 of which are Ladies of Harley – female riders.

Can you tell us a bit about some of the activities organised?
The Chapter takes into consideration riders of all levels so we adapt the activities accordingly. For example, we have a weekly ride on Tuesdays and riders have the opportunity to vote on one of two locations. If the majority of riders are new, we take the shorter more relaxing ride. The rides vary from evening rides around the island or to Dubai or Al Ain; day trips to the Northern Emirates and weekend trips to Oman. When we arrange the longer rides we often meet with other Chapters which can take the group to over 60 riders. The noise, the smell, the solidarity of such a large group riding together is a truly thrilling experience – not only for the riders, but onlookers often stop to watch. Probably because they’re wondering what’s making such a racket! We also have an annual party that is open to guests and family members. Our biggest and most exciting event this year will be the HOG MENA Rally. This incorporates the Middle East and North Africa, so it will attract hundreds of bikers. The Abu Dhabi Chapter has the honour of hosting this event for 2013 so we’re busy planning. It’s a great opportunity to show others just how special it is to be part of the Harley-Davidson Group.

What protocol is followed on road trips?
The Chapter is responsible for any ride or event it organises. Being a member of the HOG is like having an extended family so we show respect to each other, other road users and the HOG name by riding safely and promoting the sport positively. Each Chapter has its officers. For road trips we have the ‘road captain’, who is responsible for planning the route and leading the way; safety officers, who provide the training and keep the group riding collectively; and, of course, the director who gives the pre-ride brief and marks the rear of the group as we ride. The individual rider is responsible for looking out for themselves and other road users. Last but not least, the photographer – integral to any ride!

How do you communicate with the other riders when you’re all on the road?
Basically we use gestures with our hands, arms and legs to communicate:
• Stop: Left arm straight above your head with your hand in a fist.
• Ride staggered: Left arm above your head, palm facing forward with your index finger and little finger pointing to the sky.
• Ride single file: Left arm above your head with your index finger pointing to the sky.
• Hazard in the road: Leg pointing out to the side that the hazard is on.
• Slow down: Left arm straight out to the side and then raised and lowered slowly numerous times.
• Turning right: Left arm is brought out and up from the side of your body, over your head until your finger is pointing to the right. This action is repeated a couple of times.

The road captain is usually first to signal and then it trickles through the group so all riders are aware of the next move.

Why is the group exclusive to Harley riders?
The membership and some events and activities are exclusive to Harley owners but we welcome anyone who has the same riding philosophy whether they have a Harley or not.

What advice do you have for a new rider?
Come with an open mind and an open heart, the rest will come naturally.
