Campus life
Nayla Samaha Khalife, a school representative, says, ‘We have a lively programme of monthly events, including flamenco performances, art exhibitions, traditional embroidery classes and French film screenings. Coming up, we have a stand at the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, from April 30 to May 5.’

Student Pavel Sumansky, 56, is from the Czech Republic. He says, ‘I chose Alliance Française because most of the teachers are actually French and the classes are cheaper than its competitors – twice-weekly two-hour evening classes for two months costs Dhs1,900. The school buys new books every few years so they’re up to date. They come with CDs so you can learn at home. There’s a handful of us in my advanced class, most of whom are in our 40s with families and jobs, so we don’t socialise outside of class. But beginners do – there’s about 10 in a class. At the end of each term we go for dinner, to Le Beaujolais on Hamdan Street for example. I also attend the institute’s events. It hosts free film screenings, concerts and plays, which students get a 20 per cent discount on.

‘I hang out in the library; it’s not extensive, but it’s got French papers and DVDs and you can buy discounted old books. It also has a cafe where you can read magazines while eating croissants. The only downside is the institute’s location; as it’s in Khalidiyah, space is an issue – the school occupies the mezzanine of a high-rise building. But it’s relocating to a villa Al Bateen soon.’
