Five ways to practise self-care at home in the UAE

Show yourself some much needed love with these simple methods

One thing we all tend to overlook when life gets busy is the importance of self-care. With the current pandemic, taking time out to care of ourselves – both mind and body – has never been more essential.

Luckily, with all the time we’re spending at home right now, there’s no excuse not to do so.

When it comes to self-care, there are no set rules or regulations. The main point is to show yourself some kindness by doing more of the things that feed your soul and have an overall positive effect on you as an individual.

Here are five simple ways to practise self-care at home, because you deserve it…

Join Virtual Yoga classes

Anyone who has ever done yoga before knows that it is a great way to keep yourself calm and collected whilst also getting some exercise in. It is also good for breathing and helps you feel less tense which we can all do with from time to time. Do it from the comfort of your own home by trying out a virtual yoga class – Peloton is a great workout app with various daily yoga classes to stream. The app currently has a 90 free trial which is an added bonus so check it out here.

Make DIY facemasks

Taking care of the skin you are in is a great way to show yourself some love. It’s no secret that stress has a direct impact on our skin, so why not use your isolation time on making some DIY facemasks? There are endless home remedies that promise to leave your skin looking and feeling fresh and rejuvenated. Best of all? You will find most of the ingredients in your kitchen cupboard. Take some inspiration from Hollywood stars like Priyanka Chopra who swears by a turmeric, yogurt, and oatmeal recipe to brighten her skin and remove dullness. Similarly, popstar Katy Perry once revealed that she mixes egg whites and almond oil for radiant skin. And don’t worry lads, facemasks work just as well for you too.

Meditate

Meditating is one of the best ways to diminish anxiety and stay on top of your own wellbeing. Whether you like short and simple doses to kick start your day or fleshed out sessions to help centre your inner being, there are plenty of mindfulness and meditation apps to help you guide you through. Pick the one that suits you best and dedicate a regular time slot practise it at home.

Positive affirmations

Many of us are guilty of being great at complimenting others and celebrating their achievements. However, we seem to be less able to show ourselves the same level of care and kindness. To help yourself improve on this, write a list of positive affirmations, starting each sentence with the words “I am” and state some of your best qualities. Then read them out loud and repeat each sentence three times. While it is a journey, positive affirmations are believed to boost your confidence, motivate you and make you feel good about yourself overall.

Take a leisurely bath

Stuck at home with time to kill? Treat yourself to a long, leisurely bath. Light some candles, play some soothing music or a calming audiobook and take the time to relax and unwind whilst getting yourself squeaky clean with your favourite bath products. It’s a great way to destress and focus on enjoying your own company.
