Guide to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia

Everything you need to know about visiting Tabuk on KSA’s north-west coast

Overlooking Egypt across the Red Sea, the Tabuk region can be found along the north-west coast of Saudi Arabia. The vast region has fast become a popular destination for tourists thanks to its rich history, which dates back 5,000 years, and its beautiful and diverse natural landscapes. From scenic mountain vistas (the Al-Shaq mountain range is known as The Great Canyon of Saudi Arabia, and its views give those of the Grand Canyon in America a run for its money) to immaculate white beaches, the province is home to some of the most stunning natural wonders in the kingdom.

The city of Tabuk, which neighbours the Jordanian-Saudi Arabia border, is home to many historic attractions including the Hijaz Railway Station, the ancient Tabuk Fortress, and Al Tawba Mosque. Pre-20th-century, the city was a prominent stopping place for Hajj pilgrims travelling from Damascus, the capital of Syria, and onwards to Mecca, Islam’s holiest city. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing beachside holiday, an exciting diving expedition in the Red Sea to discover its coral reefs, an adventurous voyage through the mountains, or a trip jam-packed with culture, there’s so much to see, do, learn and explore.

Attractions and activities

Al Tawba Mosque

This is one of the oldest mosques in the world and according to historians, The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) prayed here in 630CE. Made using bricks, mud and palm-tree trunks, the mosque was rebuilt in 1652 by the Ottomans and is now one of the most sacred places to visit in the region.

Hijaz Railway Station

Built in the early 1900s, this Ottoman railway network ran from Syria’s Damascus to Medina and was intended to help transport pilgrims heading to Mecca. The remains of the Tabuk station is one of the biggest and best-maintained in the kingdom making it a popular tourist attraction.

Mountain climbing

The Tabuk region is to many a natural wonder and its mountain ranges are among some of the best in the Middle East. The Al-Shaq mountain range is referred to as the Great Canyon of Saudi Arabia due to its deep canyon, vast valleys and towering rocks – a bucket-list experience for all.

Museum of Antiquities & Traditional Heritage
