Malta to pay tourists up to €200 when visiting this summer

Tourism is set to reopen from June 1

One of our favourite things to do is daydream about all the places we’re going to visit when this is all over.

Almost every day we look at hotels and things to do in spots letting in fully vaccinated travellers, and we’re scrolling through pages upon pages of bikinis and sandals to the point of obsession.

If you’re the same, you might want to add Malta to your “maybe” list, as you could get up to €200 for visiting this summer.

The Malta Tourism Authority is set to launch a €3.5million scheme from June, when the country is set to welcome visitors once again.

Tourists booking a five-star hotel will receive a €100 from the MTA, while those heading to a four-star spot will receive €75, and anyone booking into a three-star hotel will get €50.

Plus, the MTA’s handout will be matched by the hotel itself – meaning you’ll get between €100 and €200 just for visiting.

To take advantage of the scheme, you’ll need to book directly through the hotel’s booking system, and stay for a minimum of three days.

There’s no end date to the programme, but it will run until the budget has been used up, and is expected to help around 35,000 tourists.

The money can be used on accommodation, food and beverages and other services inside the hotel, and you can find out full details about the scheme on the MTA website here.

Malta is currently on track for international tourism to resume from June 1, with more than 40 percent of the adult population having had at least one shot.

While not officially confirmed yet, the Maltese government plans to allow fully vaccinated travellers to travel within Malta with no restrictions.

Non-vaccinated travellers will need to provide a negative COVID-19 PCR test before arrival.
