Looking to travel to the European Union for the festive period or in the New Year? Vaccinated UAE travellers will now be able to use the Al Hosn app to prove their vaccination status when entering EU states.
The UAE’s Al Hosn app is now synced with the EU Digital COVID Certificate system, which will allow for easier travel between the United Arab Emirates and the European Union. Vaccination certificates issued by the UAE are now equivalent to those issued on the EU Digital COVID Certificate.
The UAE is one of the first countries in the MENA region to connect to the EU Digital COVID Certificate system, which launched in the summer of 2021. The update happened on Saturday December 11.

Wondering how the EU Digital COVID Certificate system works? A certificate and QR code are issued for a test, recovery or vaccination. Then a verification and authentication are performed to ensure a valid digital green certificate. With the UAE synced with the European Union’s system, its certificates will be considered equivalent to the EU Digital COVID Certificate, and vice versa.
There are now 55 countries and territories in five continents that have joined the EU Digital COVID Certificate, and more than 750 million certificates have been issued.
From Sunday December 5, the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) reduced the validity of the green pass on the Al Hosn app. Now, a negative PCR test on the app will only get green status for 14 days. (A negative test previously had green pass validity for 30 days.)
The major UAE COVID update was in line with the United Arab Emirates taking proactive measures following worldwide concern over the spread of the Omicron variant. The UAE is increasing testing to ensure safety, making booster shots available and implementing different travel restrictions.
