Sometimes you just need a taste of England. Other times you need a 12-hour happy hour. And there are occasions when you want an all-out karaoke fest. Porters English Pub manages to do all three, and well.
The low-key, laid-back pub in the Grand Millennium Al Wahda has a huge interior, with both upstairs and downstairs seating. It will remind Brits of pubs at home. The lower storey is busier, with groups of people chatting and having a good time.
And come post-brunch on a Friday this place really picks up.
Karaoke is blasted out, with guests up and dancing, belting out classics in various degrees of tunefulness and everyone having what can only be described as a jolly good knees up.
Throughout the week there’s also live music (from the pros), a Friday brunch (for Dhs225), ladies’ nights on Mondays and Tuesdays (offering three free drinks), plus a carvery on Sunday, and plenty of screens to watch the latest match.
Oenophiles, you won’t find a massive grape list to peruse, but if you’re after a pint or a Scottish short measure you’re in luck as there’s a lengthy selection of both.
Drinks are reasonable, and on a Friday you’ll find a post-brunch package for Dhs155 (it’s unlimited drinks from 4pm until 7pm).
Meanwhile there’s a daily happy hour from noon until midnight – which is always warmly welcomed.
The vibe is friendly, with both staff and fellow pubgoers relaxed and fun.
