Sometimes there’s nothing else for it other than to visit a good, old-fashioned proper pub or bar that doesn’t do gimmicks.
We like the fancy venues, the stunning lounges and beachfront bars that make Abu Dhabi a charming place to enjoy a beverage, but really, when it all comes down to it, most of the time all we want is a fuss-free experience in a place where we can enjoy a cool drink and maybe tuck into a chicken wing (or five).
We don’t mind things a little rugged, places where the carpet is long past its best, and there’s smoke in the air masking a lingering scent of good night’s out long-since passed. We’re not too fussy (but we can be when we want to be wowed or to wow someone else).
Humble and consistent, we’ve been to Victor’s Pub on many occasions, to watch a match, having a quick one after work and when the hands of the clock have long left midnight.
It hasn’t changed a great deal and we’re cool with that – consistency is key and as the old saying goes, if it ain’t broke then don’t fix it.
This time we’re visiting mid-week after a busy day at Time Out Towers and we’re looking forward to a cool drink and a quick break from keeping everyone up to date about all the things worth knowing about in Abu Dhabi.
It’s early evening and the place is still a little quiet, although we’re sure as we can testify to on previous visits that on weekends and later in the evening the place will be busier.
We’re after a pint of hops and there’s no chance they won’t have that here.
We order two and they come in at Dhs78 for the pair full price but Dhs40 during happy hour, which is a pretty good deal if you ask us.
The drinks arrive rapidly, the service is efficient and the atmosphere is chilled compared to the vibrant scenes at brunch.
It’s a fun place to while away a couple of hours if you’re looking for a fuss-free setting with pals.
Victor’s has hardly changed, it’s reliable and offers exactly what you’d expect. It’s not flash, but for a casual pint you’d do worse.
