Massive new exhibition coming to NYU Abu Dhabi Art Gallery

Khaleej Modern: Pioneers and Collectives in the Arabian Peninsula looks at modern art movements

There’s a huge new exhibition coming to Abu Dhabi and history buffs and art aficionados are going to want it on their radar.

The NYU Abu Dhabi Art Gallery is bringing a huge exhibition to Saadiyat Island: Khaleej Modern: Pioneers and Collectives in the Arabian Peninsula, 1941-2008. The new exhibition will trace the twentieth century modern art movements across the Arabian Peninsula (AKA the Khaleej).

The exhibition will open on Tuesday September 6 and is curated by Dr. Aisha Stoby, who also recently curated the Oman pavilion at the Venice Biennale. Khaleej Modern will be free to enter and will be on until Sunday December 11.

Khaleej Modern is based on Dr. Stoby’s PhD research tracing the region’s pre-boom era to 2008 and examines the evolution of visual art movements as the discovery of oil transformed the region. The exhibition at NYU Abu Dhabi Art Gallery is all about local art histories contextualised with deeply rooted traditions and evolving national identities.

It begins with the first exhibition of Kuwait’s Al Mubarakiya school in 1941, then travels to Saudi Arabia with artists such as Mohammed Racim in Jeddah and the Saudi House of Fine Arts in Riyadh. You’ll also find artwork from Bahrain’s Manama Group, Qatar’s The Three Friends Collective, key figures in Oman’s art history and the UAE’s early art practitioners and groups.

Sounds like the perfect opportunity to learn about the region’s art history.
