Environmental preservation and conservation is a key goal for Abu Dhabi and the UAE.
Keeping the natural landscape and wildlife thriving, The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has released their 2019 report, marking the 25 year anniversary of the organisation.
The report highlights the key achievements in protecting the environment and biodiversity, combating climate change and working towards a sustainable future.
Among the main achievements, EAD announced that Abu Dhabi is now home to the largest herd of Arabian Oryx in the world, with 5,000 calling the UAE capital home.
In addition, the dugong population has now reached 3,000 and is among the largest population in the world.
Making new discoveries, EAD also announced that samples of invertebrates that led to the conservation of 2,457 species, of which 100 species were not previously known in the UAE.
Finally, the Sheikh Zayed Protected Area Network grew to 19 land and marine wildlife reserves, covering a total of 31 percent of the emirate.
“We will continue to work for more success and progress in 2020 with the implementation of our government’s vision to achieve a balance between economic and social growth and environmental protection,” said Dr Shaikha al Dhaheri, Secretary-General of the EAD.
“As always, the agency will work towards ensuring the sustainability of our natural resources and the continuity of a better life for future generations.”
