Abu Dhabi single-use plastic ban rules: which plastics are covered?

Have you heard the news about the Abu Dhabi single-use plastic ban? Abu Dhabi has banned single-use plastic bags from Wednesday June 1, 2022 as part of a wider initiative to help protect the environment and reduce pollution.

The announcement was made earlier this month, but the Abu Dhabi Government Media Office (ADGMO) has since clarified what it will mean for shoppers and retailers. Wondering which single-use plastics will count in the ban?

On Wednesday April 27, ADGMO announced the Abu Dhabi single-use plastic ban outline was announced. The rules highlight which products will be banned in the UAE capital.

Currently, only single-use plastics will be banned as part of the Abu Dhabi single-use plastic ban, meaning that other types of plastics will still be allowed. So, what is considered single-use plastics? Single-use plastic grocery bags will be banned apart from the thin plastic bags you use for vegetables and meat.

Wondering what else will count in the Abu Dhabi single-use plastic ban? Trash bags, bin liners and pharmacy bags are not included in the ban. Reusable bags with the least environmental impact will be offered by retailers, or you can bring your own reusable bags.

Abu Dhabi also offering free rides for bus passengers who recycle their plastic bottles. Bus passengers gain points every time they put empty plastic bottles in a plastics deposit machine. The points will be compiled and added to the Hafilat Personalised Bus Card, which can then be used to pay for bus fares.

The Abu Dhabi single-use plastic ban isn’t the only eco-friendly move in the UAE. Dubai is also rolling out a new policy to reduce plastic bag usage across the emirate. Single-use plastic bags cost 25 fils from Friday July 1 – with the ultimate goal to completely pan single-use plastic in two years. The charge will be applied in all stores, such as clothing stores, restaurants, delivery orders, textile stores, pharmacies and e-commerce orders.
