It doesn’t take too many pictures of freshly baked breads, cakes and bakes on Instagram before we take notice. Throw some pretzels into the mix and we’re already smitten and ready to feast.
When we arrive as brot. The German Bakery (that lower case ‘b’ and full stop are really going to wind us up over the years) we’re a little confused, as it seems to share space with Italian restaurant Andiamo, but we soon follow the smell of freshly baked bread and find what we’re looking for.
There are a lot of tasty looking loaves ready to be taken home and cakes to be enjoyed with a hot drink, but take a seat in the split venue and tuck in here.
A pair of sandwiches, made with freshly baked kaiser rolls, are still warm from the oven. The mozzarella and tomato roll is creamy and light, and is easily dispatched within a few large bites. The salami and smoked cheese roll is equally enjoyable and it doesn’t last long on the plate either.
Having salivated while staring at the soft pretzels, we happily tuck into one of those, too and we don’t regret it for a second. Wonderfully soft, salty and unmistakably European, it gives us flashbacks to time well-spent shopping at winter markets wrapped in scarves and jackets in years gone by.
brot is simple, understated and efficient (we tried to resist the stereotypes…). It’s something of a hidden gem and we’ll be back to pick up a loaf, or two, or three, soon.
