Kingston 21

Serious chilled-out vibes and classic Jamaican dishes at Abu Dhabi’s newest Caribbean restaurant

It’s pretty much set. Kingston 21 has the best waterside terrace views in the city. And no, we have not been bedazzled by a plate of barbecue chicken wings… But they certainly don’t hurt the case for this place.

Bringing the laid-back vibes of the Caribbean island to Abu Dhabi since it arrived in March this year, Jamaican-inspired Kingston 21 helps plug a sizeable gap in the city’s food market as well as that gaping hole in your stomach.

In contrast to the construction sites dominating the neighbourhood, Kingston 21 is fantastically relaxed.

Inside, sink into one of the yellow and grey lounge chairs if you’re after a quick coffee, or pull up a perch in the main dining area if you’re here for the jerk chicken (and the rest). And why wouldn’t you be?

Outside, the seaside terrace offers stunning views of Yas Island (a must-see at night) plus two blue-pillowed cabanas where, presumably, you can seek refuge after razing your way through the menu.

On the food front, start off with the Jamaican beef patty and the aforementioned jerk barbecue wings, which pack a delayed peppery punch. Magnificently messy, and one plate you absolutely shouldn’t skip.

For mains, get stuck into the signature mento oxtail. A genuine stew crammed with spices, carrots, potatoes and a five-hour stewed oxtail (watch out for bones), it is an explosion of flavour that is joined by a mountain of rice and peas.

Honourable mention must go to the rock steady jerk chicken, marinated for more than 24 hours and slow-smoked on the grill. Another messy eat, so don’t wear your finest white shirt, but your taste buds will be dancing.

Abu Dhabi doesn’t lack many things, and the arrival of Kingston 21 adds another celebration of Caribbean cuisine to the city’s fantastically diverse dining scene.

If you didn’t know what you were missing, you’ll be in no doubt after a meal at this brilliant Jamaican joint.
