Loca

A fun-loving, casual Mexican joint

Loca
Loca

There are few things better than chilling out with your mates, a pint and a platter of sizzling fajitas.

If you’re of a similar mindset, then we suggest you visit Loca. Chances are, if you’re a Mexican food fan, you already have, but in which case it’s time to make a return to this laid-back eatery.

With a casual yet lively vibe, this popular spot on Al Maryah Island caters to many moods.

Loca is pretty much always busy, with a fun vibe in the industrial, warehousy space it fills. There’s a large central bar if you’re just after a drink and a snack, while plenty of screens show live sport and there’s a daily happy hour from 5pm until 8pm as well as a super-popular ladies’ night every Wednesday.

Now it’s winter the expansive terrace by the water is a top place to while away a couple of hours with a Mexican mixed drink and a bowl of guacamole (created table side to your choosing, smashed with a variety of extras, of course).

However, if you’re looking for a full meal, you’ve also come to the right place. And full you’ll be – as the portions are gigantic.

We’ve long waxed lyrical about the jalapeño locas, and you should absolutely try them. Al dente chillis stuffed full of rich, gooey melted cheese and rolled in crushed tortilla chips make for the ideal texture combination. They’re also utterly delicious, with a fiery kick.

All the usual suspects are on the menu – from enchiladas to burritos, tacos and fajitas. We opt for the chicken version of the latter and they’re a hit. Perfectly spiced and super-tasty. We load up the tortillas with as much of the filling as they can fit.

The star of the show, however, is the shrimp tostada salad. “Who orders a salad in a Mexican comfort food joint?” we hear you utter. Well, we do, apparently, and we wholeheartedly suggest you do too, as it’s excellent. Visually it’s impressive (pictured, above) with heaps of tossed leaves spilling from a large tortilla bowl.

We’re in no way suggesting this is a healthy option, slathered in fantastically tasty dressing and laced with guacamole, refried beans and sour cream, but at least there’s some of your five a day in there. Huge, juicy grilled prawns top it off.

For decent-value Tex-Mex dishes served with a smile, you can’t go wrong with this classic.
