Marta Bar

Chic secret bar at the Louvre Abu Dhabi

Marta Bar
Marta Bar

There is something so mystifying about being under the dome at Louvre Abu Dhabi. The patterns of light streaming in with the water quietly lapping the building; it’s otherworldly and also delightfully calm.

But when visiting Louvre Abu Dhabi after hours, calm gives way to a small frisson of excitement. Even more so when you’re searching for a secret bar. Yes, the experience of visiting Marta Bar begins long before you reach it.

And the first bit is getting yourself a set of wheels – or two. Hop into a golf cart for a winding drive through the museum to Fouquets. If you’re already enjoying the adventure at this point, expect another buzz of excitement when you’re led to a secret elevator.

Emerge from the ride into a long room with a patterned mirror covering one wall, soft grey carpet and warm art-deco lamps. With so much fluidity, it all combines to create the effect of being inside a giant lava lamp.

Grab a seat in one of the comfy, cushioned chairs and peruse the menu, while you nibble green olives and crunchy bar bits.

The menu includes every type of mixed drink you could ask for, all featuring upscale brand names. The bubbly mixed drinks are an unusual find; the menu also features an extensive grape list and premium hops. Everything is a touch more expensive than you might be used to: the cheapest drink is Dhs45 and the most expensive is Dhs14,000, but the quality and atmosphere make the higher price point worth it. Just be sure to look the part as the dress code is casual-chic with no trainers or shorts allowed in the evenings.

The atmosphere is generally relatively quiet, well suited to a relaxed date night or intimate chat with a friend.

And it’s not just a “bar” bar. The menu also features teas, coffees and fresh juices, so you could drop by for an afternoon coffee after wandering around the museum, but the place is in its prime at night.

Marta Bar is a secret spot that those in the know have already visited, and we can see it becoming a fast favourite among those who enjoy quality food and drink paired with an unusual experience.

One to revisit? In a heartbeat. Bring on the art and good vibes.
