With a prime spot on Al Bandar harbour, Nolu’s has a reputation for serving up fresh and healthy food in generous portions.
When we visit on a Saturday lunchtime it’s relatively busy with a mix of young couples, families, and those who have just come for a coffee and to work on their laptop.
The menu is definitely a bit hipster, but in a good way. The Californian-inspired dishes include Healthy Bowls such as the Protein and Stamina salads. The names are an obvious ploy to draw in the health nuts, but packed with all manner of delicious veggies, seeds and dressings, they’re rather good.
But it isn’t all about avocado, quinoa and chia seeds here. Although the chilled-out vibe, friendly servers, and wooden tables also give the place a hippy West Coast feel. Afghani dishes make up a huge part of the menu and we decide to start with some sharing plates. The combination of the beef, garlic yoghurt and tomato sauce make the mantoo dumplings the best of our selection, although the borani banjon and potato bolani are also brilliantly flavoured and interesting.
Not realising just how hearty the shareables would be, we also get the salmon kabob. The marinated fish falls apart perfectly and there’s loads of flavoursome rice and roast peppers.
The famous Nolu’s chutney also has to be given a mention. Just the right amount of sweet and spicy, we can’t get enough of it.
We’ll definitely be back to sample more of this amazing and very varied menu.
