Tashas

A popular café and restaurant in Abu Dhabi’s Al Bateen area

Tashas

According to the theory of relativity by Albert Einstein, the speed of light is the only true constant but we’d argue that the quality on offer at tashas deserves the same acclaim.

The café/restaurant in Al Bateen has been a smash hit since it first opened and every weekend, if you’re heading along, you’ll be hard pushed to find a seat without having to wait for one to become available.

So, what we’re trying to say is make sure you book ahead, especially on a Friday or Saturday morning. The venue, despite having stiff competition nearby, remains as popular as ever.

If you can, make sure you get a seat on the gorgeous terrace to make the most of the weather and vibrant atmosphere amongst your fellow diners.

There are many places to head out for breakfast in Abu Dhabi, but tashas is undoubtedly one of the main places to be for your coffee and eggs.

We order the mariachi, a Mexican-style egg dish, and the breakfast royale, a classic combo of poached egg, sourdough, smoked salmon and asparagus.

Also ordered, as is necessary in the morning, are a couple of coffees.

The coffee arrives first, the americano is perfect (we have it with a spot of almond milk, there are other dairy alternatives available) and an affogato, espresso and ice cream, is a suitably indulgent start to the day.

Service is swift, perhaps surprisingly so given how busy the place is, and the food arrives within 15 minutes. The kitchen, it seems, knows how to deal with these crowds.

The spicy scrambled eggs with chilli and coriander is wrapped in tortillas and doused in Tabasco (our choice). The breakfast royale is equally brilliant, with soft eggs oozing over the toast, perfectly cooked spears of asparagus and quality smoked salmon.

If you can withstand the jealous glances from those waiting for a seat, we totally recommend you get some cake, too. A portion of carrot cake is big enough for two and it’s a work of art. Perfectly soft and moist, sweet without overdoing it and with delicious icing, you might want to go back for more.

It’s good to know there are reliable spots like tashas about. We can’t really fault it.
