New contemporary art exhibition opens at the Louvre Abu Dhabi

The first edition of the Richard Mille Art Prize exhibition is showcasing seven artists

The inaugural edition of Louvre Abu Dhabi’s new annual contemporary art exhibition, Louvre Abu Dhabi Art Here 2021, is open now and it looks incredible.

The Louvre Abu Dhabi Art Here 2021 exhibition is bringing contemporary art to one of the greatest museums in the world, with seven UAE-based artists being showcased.

The exhibition is part of the first edition of the Richard Mille Art Prize, which will award one of the participating artists USD50,000. The exhibition explores the theme “Memory, Time and Territory”. It will run until March 27 2022, with the winner being announced in January 2022.

The shortlisted artists include Cristiana de Marchi, Latifa Saeed, Mays Albaik, Mohammed Kazem, Nasser Alzayani, Tarek Al-Ghoussein, and Taus Makhacheva. They were selected by the prize’s jury following an open call for proposals from UAE-based artists. They were asked to respond to this year’s theme by addressing questions of memory and belonging, and exploring the geography of identity through artists’ personal relationships with territories.

Each artist responded to the theme with different interpretations and mediums. Cristiana de Marchi is presenting hand-embroidered canvas with her artwork Mapping Gaps: Beirut, while Latifa Saeed is using glass for her artwork The Pathway. Mays Albaik’s Awaiting Weightlessness is an installation of aluminum video sculptures, and Mohammed Kazem is displaying his photographic series Photographs with Flags. Nasser Alzayani uses sand artefacts, collected recordings and works on paper in his installation Watering the distant, deserting the near. Tarek Al-Ghoussein is presenting prints from his ongoing Odysseus series, and Taus Makhacheva has employed a mix of video and body-oriented objects for her work Mining Serendipity.

There are new exhibitions across Abu Dhabi and Dubai, including those at the NYU Abu Dhabi Art Gallery, Dubai Design Week, and Art Dubai, as well as Expo 2020 Dubai.

It’s a great time to be an art lover in Abu Dhabi. We’re heading to the new exhibition pronto.

Until March 27, 2022. Louvre Abu Dhabi, Saadiyat Island (600 56 5566).
