Iftar tents return: UAE Ramadan 2022 iftar tent guidelines announced

This is the first time iftar tents are permitted since the coronavirus pandemic started

The Ramadan 2022 iftar tent setup rules have been announced by the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA) to ensure public safety and to be in line with current COVID-19 guidelines in the UAE. This marks the first time that iftar tents are permitted in the United Arab Emirates since the coronavirus pandemic began in 2020.

On Monday March 14, NCEMA and its main partners announced iftar safety measures to ensure that those celebrating Ramadan 2022 would do so safely.

The iftar tent regulations include having participants at least one metre apart and having iftar tents open two hours before the time of Iftar (Maghrib call to prayer) to reduce crowding. Additionally, there will be security guards and/or volunteers to manage people at the entry and exits of iftar tents. Furthermore, there will be posters at all iftar tent entrances and exits to ensure a smooth flow of people.

Wondering about having green status for iftars in the UAE? The Al Hosn Green Pass system and tent capacities will be determined by the local committees in each emirate. Having green status is currently mandatory to enter public places in Abu Dhabi.

People attending iftars in the UAE should also avoid handshakes during greetings, according to NCEMA’s 2022 Ramadan guidelines.

Similarly, other COVID-19 protocols must be followed including wearing face masks, maintaining social distancing, using hand sanitiser, and more.

As part of the Ramadan 2022 iftar tent setup, iftar tents must be designed with a form of canopy that is open from all sides or be air-conditioned, in addition to “incorporating all required safety and protection systems”.

As part of the UAE iftar tent protocols, it is mandatory that tents have disposable table covers. Disposable plates, cutlery and cups for each individual are recommended as part of the Ramadan 2022 iftar tent setup protocol. As previously mentioned, iftar guests must be sat one metre apart at dining tables.

Curious about the Ramadan 2022 iftar tent setup measures and capacities in Abu Dhabi or Dubai? Local authorities in each of the emirates will approve the setup of iftar tents, the maximum capacity for each tent and their locations in coordination with the Emirates Red Crescent (ERC).

NCEMA noted that all current Ramadan 2022 iftar tent measures are still subject to change based on local and global health situations, as the world still deals with the coronavirus pandemic. NCEMA encouraged the public to continue to follow preventative COVID-19 measures.
