The crescent moon has been sighted

Ramadan 2022 will start on Saturday April 2 in the UAE.

The official announcement was made by UAE government news agency WAM after the UAE’s Moon Sighting Committee and Abu Dhabi Judicial Department (ADJD) met on Friday April 1.

This means that Ramadan 2022 will start tomorrow and continue until Monday 2 May 2022.

The committee, chaired by Minister of Justice Abdullah Sultan bin Awad Al Nuaimi, Minister of Justice came to the decision as it was confirmed that the crescent moon (called hilal) coincides with the astronomical new moon.

Ramadan is the most important month in the Islamic Calendar. It is when Muslims fast (known as sawm) from sunrise to sunset for around 30 days. Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam, alongside daily prayer, giving to charity, the declaration of faith and the hajj pilgrimage to Mecca.

Ramadan is a time of reflection, charity and sharing, so it’s a good time to embrace the local culture and get involved with the spirit of the month.

By law, working hours are reduced throughout Ramadan, as well as school times – but be sure to check with your child’s school as these vary.

The city is celebrating the month with a number of iftar and suhoor dining experiences for those breaking their fasts and those who want to get involved.

This year is the first since 2019 that Ramadan tents are allowed to take place again, though there will be some restrictions in place. The tent’s canopy must be open from all sides or be air-conditioned, as well as sitting groups at least one metre apart.

During Ramadan, it is important to act in a respectful manner.

Though there have been no official rules released this year, eating, drinking and smoking in public is not advisable unless you’re within a restaurant or designated space. Music should also be kept at a low volume.
