Dubai International Airport runway closure: a complete guide for travellers

Travelling out of Dubai on your next break? The busiest airport in the world, Dubai International Airport (DXB), is now part-closed.

But don’t fret as we have gathered together all the essential information you need to know.

The northern runway is the area that will not be in use. During this time the southern runway will remain open.

Wondering what maintenance is being done? Upgrades include the placement of asphalt and concrete on the runway. Cables and runway lights also need to be replaced and installed.

When will the closure start and end?

The northern runway will close on Monday May 9 for the 45-day refurbishment project.

If everything goes as planned, it will be back up and running on Wednesday June 22.

Flydubai, Air India Express, Qatar Airways, Spice Jet and Indigo are some of the airlines which will be using Dubai World Central during the period.

Are Emirates flights impacted by the Dubai runway closure?

Emirates airline will not experience any changes during the closure of DXB. All flights scheduled in and out of DXB’s Terminal 3 are operating as normal.

How do I get to Dubai World Central airport?

You can take a taxi to the airport, and if you drive you can take advantage of the free on-site parking for passengers.

If you prefer public transport, there is no metro station at DWC. The nearest metro station is Expo 2020 Metro station, about a 15-minute cab ride from the airport.

Will there be any help for travellers to get to and from Dubai International Airport and Dubai World Central?

Those with connecting flights that are flying in and out of the two airports can use the inter-airport coach. It is free to use for travellers with connecting flights and will be available 24 hours a day, seven days of the week.
