Drone deliveries in Abu Dhabi could soon be a reality

The future is coming

Great news. Abu Dhabi residents could soon be getting their deliveries by drone.

Emirati logistics company AD Ports Group has announced that it will be trialling a new unmanned droned delivery service in the UAE capital.

The new drone delivery service will be used to deliver packages and documents to Emirates Post sites across Abu Dhabi.

According to AD Ports Group, who is partnering with the UAE’s national mail service Emirates Post Group and Hong-Kong based aerial logistics provider Skygo logistics, the delivery drone service will also deliver food and medicine.

The goal for the drone delivery service is to provide Abu Dhabi residents with a fast, sustainable service that can deliver medical supplies, fresh food and documents as quickly as possible, with real-time tracking.

Margo Hub, a digital market place, will be facilitating online transactions between customers and Emirates Post, while SkyGo will provide drone solutions.

Details of the drone delivery service trial will be released towards the end of the year, with a full offering planned to launch in the next year, pending approval.

“Drone services could enable greater convenience and faster delivery times for customers across Abu Dhabi, while ensuring positive environmental impact,” said Dr Noura Al Dhaheri, CEO for digital cluster and Maqta Gateway at AD Ports Group.

A drone delivery service could be groundbreaking for the UAE since it’s a more sustainable option than using delivery trucks that omit carbon into the atmosphere. However, the use of a drone delivery service could mean that delivery jobs are threatened.

Abu Dhabi already has a wide range of delivery services on offer for residents, including Talabat, Deliveroo, Uber Eats and Aramax all delivering food, medical supplies and documents. But a drone delivery service could be quicker, more efficient and better for the environment.

The use of drones for delivery services is already growing in some parts of the world. US retail giant Amazon is currently working on developing a program, while Israel has been trialling the service, delivering sushi, hops, ice cream and more across the country.
