House of Artisans opens its doors at Qasr Al Hosn

New cultural destination in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi’s cultural scene is in a clean bill of health, and it’s just been given a further boost with the opening of a brand-new permanent exhibition that pays homage to artisans of the UAE.

Late in March we brought you the news that Louvre Abu Dhabi had been loaned some of the world’s most captivating masterpieces, including works of world-renowned artist Marc Chagall.

But today the headlines belong to the creative practises born and bred here in the UAE with the opening of the House of Artisans at Qasr Al Hosn.

Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Member of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council and Chairman of Abu Dhabi Executive Office, officially opened the space, which strives to support, promote and safeguard Abu Dhabi’s intangible heritage for years to come.

Visitors will be able to discover local crafts, including the materials, skills and techniques required to produce them, and view contemporary pieces by emerging and established Emirati artists and designers who have been inspired by UAE handicrafts.

One such example is al-sadu, which is a traditional form of weaving practiced by Bedouin women.

Utilising the wool of sheep, camel and goat, these women craft distinctive designs rich with geometrical patterns, often reflecting both social identity and the surrounding environment.

This intricate weaving was used to create the bait al-shaar (the tent) and various Al-Sadu patterns were used to decorate the interior tent divider.

House of Artisans includes workshop spaces and will run public programmes, such as workshops, courses and events, to further raise awareness of the artistic and social values that have shaped Emirati identity.
