La Brioche

Quiet downtown cafe with more focus than most

From Time Out Abu Dhabi Eating Out 2010

The logo may evoke memories of gay Paris and the waitresses’ outfits (crisp white blouses and tight black skirtshave more than a dash of ooh la la, but en Francais is not exactly the language of choice at La Brioche. This faux French café walks as Gallic a line as it can before stumbling over the convenience of full English breakfasts and microwave-warm croissants (always a neat trick if they’ve been left over from the previous night). But take away the gimmicks and you’ve still got one of the better drop-ins in the capital. There are plenty of branches in the city, but the Khalifa Street café does a brisker trade than its more laidback Khalidiya or mall cousins. A busy high street café is the result, with the usual accompanying parking issues. The breakfast crowd is well catered for, while the smell of fresh bread (there is a bakery) and the array of neat little pastries make this a pretty enviable location. Add to that decent coffees, a good 70 per cent hot chocolate and some juicy omelettes and you’re set for the day. For the lunchtime set, the quiches and sandwiches are good and not too dear either. In the end, while La Brioche might not be the full Sarkozy, it’s a pretty good Clouseau and a great little café if you’re passing by.
