If you Picked up PJ’s and dropped it anywhere in the UK or Ireland it wouldn’t look at all out of place. That’s a compliment, because it’s not easy to replicate the atmosphere and feel of a classic pub. It’s inviting, unpretentious and we’re all-in – after all it picked up our Pub of the Year 2019 award. The food is reminiscent of British pubs, and what it lacks in presentation it makes up for with massive portions that remind us of family dinners. So you can forget taking Instagram pictures, put your phone away and just enjoy a bite to eat for a change.
To start, calamari rings arrive at the table in a huge pile, they’re drenched in a chilli sauce that’s more sweet than spicy and we’re not 100 percent sure it works. That said, we nearly clear the plate, so maybe it does? Soaked with sticky BBQ sauce, the tender chicken wings also vanish quickly.
What else for our main than fish and chips? With three pieces of perfectly fried fish, chunky chips, mushy peas and tartare sauce, simply, it’s a winner and enough to feed two. Equally massive is the steak and chips, served with two friend eggs on top, with perfect yolks just asking for chips to be dipped in them. We do, of course, and it’s wonderful.
Most dishes include a meat you’d find in pubs throughout Ireland that’s less common here… If that’s not your scene then maybe it’s best avoided, for everyone else, there’s nothing else like it in the city and if you clear your plate, kudos to you.
