Todd English’s Olives

Review: A dimly-lit and moody bar that deserves a visit in its own right

We’ve talked about this venue, from American celebrity chef Todd English, many times on these pages, but we’re usually discussing the merits of the restaurant.

It is, after all, the recipient of a couple of Time Out Abu Dhabi Restaurant Awards Highly Commended plaques, thanks to the tip-top European dishes it serves. Here you’ll find big portions, bags of flavour and comforting dishes.
You will also find an excellent bar at the back of the venue. Separate from the dining room, this is a proper bar, with its own identity and vibe and a place you could absolutely come to whether you’re planning on eating or not (though we recommend you do get some grub while you’re here, obviously).

Staff are super, and will gladly recommend a mixed drink to suit your tastes, or you could try one of the many juniper drinks, each with a special tonic to match. Hops fans aren’t left out by any means, with a good range of bottles available, as well as some of the more standard draught choices. Grape is well represented, too, unsurprisingly seeing as it’s a Mediterranean restaurant.

Sitting at one of the stools at the bar is a good way to get some tips from the bar staff, but we find the other high chairs, with very narrow tables to perch your drinks on, a little uncomfortable. Much cosier are the loungey sofas further back.

If you stay a while, the bill could rack up. But this is a classy venue that is well worth checking out.

The bottom line

Classy with good drinks and service.
