Barfly by Buddha-Bar describes itself as “the only Neo-Baroque mystic-lounge concept in Abu Dhabi”. Good luck with getting your head around that.
This convoluted phrase basically means that it offers an informal-formal dining experience, and we perch ourselves on bar stools at a minimalist waterside table as we choose our food.
The hot crispy shrimps last no time at all; the sauce is spot on and the coating is delicious. Meanwhile, the California rolls are an ideal contrast with the tangy appetiser. These neat parcels of crab meat, avocado and Barfly’s special mayonnaise are presented superbly and taste as good as their colourful look.
We’re already fans and the mains don’t let us down. The mie goreng with chicken impresses both of us; the Indonesian favourite is packed with flavoursome vegetables, fried noodles and a spicy sauce that tingles on the tongue.
However, we slightly disagree on the Szechuan beef. One deems it a touch dry, the other that the tenderloin is nicely moistened by the caramelised onion and coriander dressing.
The crunchy texture and freshness of the ginger-infused broccoli makes it the perfect accompaniment to the bulk of the noodles and beef.
The staff are all totally on the ball, and the food is on point.
