The capital is fast moving, and things come and go in the blink of an eye. But if there’s one thing that’s consistent, it’s the quality of the food at Cho Gao. That, and the portion sizes.
The pan-Asian eatery inside the InterContinental takes its name from the Vietnamese phrase for rice market, and we certainly can’t resist grabbing some while here (and neither should you). Highlights on the menu span the continent, ranging from Chinese black pepper beef to roasted duck Thai red curry.
The excellent food no doubt draws in the crowds, but plenty are just here to enjoy the extensive menu in the bar area.
You may struggle to pick from the starters, with bao buns, dim sum and maki – including some wild fusion options like Thai green curry and nasi goreng maki – all making an appearance. Don’t miss the chicken dim sum, which are devoured, and vegetable tempura. If you go for the latter, we would recommend sharing it, it’s hefty for a veggie dish.
Following the veg theme, braised tofu and aubergine in a chilli bean paste is a real highlight, with perfectly silken tofu and a welcome spicy kick. The beef rendang is also a hit, after being drenched in sauce and with no skimping on the portion size here, either. The menu might be vast, but there won’t be any clangers no matter what country you opt for.
With consistently good food, huge portions, and a great beverage menu, Cho Gao is a guaranteed great night no matter what you’re in the mood for.
