Mama Fu’s

There’s an Asian newcomer in town that won’t break the bank

With so many Asian dining options in the city, we decided to see what makes newbie Mama Fu’s special.

Mama Fu’s is an American chain that recently launched its very first international branch right here in the capital. It offers a mixture of Asian dishes, but is predominantly Thai. Not that we’re complaining.

We kick off our dinner with the signature Thai dynamite shrimp starter – a mini mountain of crispy shrimps, lathered in a spicy sauce and served in a glass. As we glance across the room, we notice three other tables indulging in the same appetiser. And we can taste why.

Despite the chilli warning on the menu, it’s “shopping mall spicy”. Just spicy enough to keep the masses happy. We’d prefer it with a bit of added sting, but it’s still delicious nonetheless.

For mains we sway away from our beloved pad Thai to try the Thai basil beef instead. The rice noodle dish, which can be served with beef, chicken or prawns, consists of a combination of chilli hoisin sauce, basil, white mushrooms, red pepper, bean sprouts and scallions. And yes, it’s as delicious as it sounds. The portion is enormous, which means we have a delicious leftover lunch to look forward to tomorrow – what more do you need?

And while the dessert menu is small (it’s only got two options), the cheesecake picture on the menu catches our attention. Wrapped in crispy pastry, sprinkled with cinnamon and served with raspberry sauce, it’s officially the highlight of our day. Bravo!

Being a chain located in a busy mall, Mama Fu’s is never going to be known as the best Asian cuisine in town. But what makes it unique is that it’s an affordable, convenient and tasty option for the whole family. It’s certainly something to look forward to after your shopping duties at Dalma Mall.

The bill
1x Dynamite shrimp Dhs40
1x Thai basil beef Dhs45
1x Cheesecake Dhs25
Total Dhs110

The bottom line Value for money and great Asian cuisine.
