El Sombrero

Restaurant review: A casual and popular Mexican at Sheraton Abu Dhabi

El Sombrero
El Sombrero

Head along to one of the city’s veteran hotels and you’ll find this unassuming Mexican restaurant hidden away. You could easily walk past it. In fact, we did, but we found our way inside to find a busy restaurant with more than half the tables full.

The decor could maybe do with an upgrade, we imagine its been this way for years, but we’re not here to offer decorating tips.

We’re hungry and we find it hard to resist guacamole so dig in to a bowl to start, alongside some crunchy nachos. Our only complaint is it’s just guacamole, we don’t know what exactly we were expecting but the starter is certainly literal in its description.

The fajitas arrive sizzling. You can hear them coming from the kitchen. With grilled chicken, vegetables and a smoky sauce, we get stuck in, overloading soft tortillas with the mix, adding cheese and sour cream. They’re simple but lovely.

The beef enchiladas are delicious, but arrive looking sloppy. Cheese and sauce is everywhere but they taste fantastic. There’s maybe a little too much cheese on top (which has started to solidify), but a little refinement in presentation and they would be the dish of the night.

It’s casual, the food is good and with a little more flare it could be a real gem.
