Restaurant review: Mezze and fresh seafood by Eastern Mangroves

Flooka
Flooka

Looking over the Eastern Mangroves National Park, the outdoor terrace at Flooka is one of the most picturesque spots in Abu Dhabi.

It means that during the cooler months, the wide platform is always packed with people, and you’ll be lucky to get a table near the water’s edge. It’s a tranquil setting for a meal, and the menu features Lebanese plates and seafood, plus some dishes (such as the hummus with diced fish) that manage to mix the two themes.

We start with the classic hummus and a basket of beautifully warm, seeded flatbread. The delightfully smooth chickpea concoction is one of the best we’ve tried in the city, and we also enjoy the fresh and light flavours of the vibrant purple labneh.

Moving on to the mains, we get a whole grilled red snapper, chosen from the ice display of fresh fish. It tastes fantastic, and we have no trouble believing that it was only plucked out of the Gulf that morning. This is joined by an over-flowing bowl of piping hot batata harra and a healthy rocca and zaatar salad. The house dressing on the latter is both creamy and firey, while the chilli on the potatoes give them a brilliant kick.

This is one of those tremendous spots where the food is just as good as the views, and it’s no hardship to finish it all off.
