Ushna

Excellent, unintimidating Indian cuisine in palatial surrounds

Given the myriad of dirt-cheap, authentic curry houses in the city, it can be hard to justify spending three or four times more at one of the city’s high-end Indian restaurants. Not so at Ushna. The setting is modern and attractive (book well in advance for a spot on the terrace and a view of the Grand Mosque), the service is spot-on and the food happens to be some of the best in the city – Indian or otherwise. Key to the menu’s success is its accessibility.

Those comfortable with Indian cuisine can be adventurous with the more creative dishes – like the starter of shredded sweet and sour chicken with mango – while there’s safer options of murgh makhani and vegetable biryani. Better still, portion sizes aren’t overwhelming, meaning you’ll leave with a warm, spicy glow rather than a groaning belt and a promise to never touch another sheekh kebab as long as you live. The fact that children aren’t welcome in the evenings may put some diners off, but for everyone else, the Ushna experience should feature very high on your to-do list.
