We’re all for new venues trying something different, So, when we first heard about Groovz opening in the Novotel Al Bustan, we got a bit excited.
Described as an Asian bar with food, music and an atmosphere to match, and coming from the people behind the Irish pub Victor’s and Lebanese restaurant Dahab, the pedigree is good and the concept seems to have legs.
We enter around 9pm one evening to find the place pretty much empty. It’s still early days, and is in its soft opening period, according to staff. There also isn’t much in the way of signage in the hotel to point you towards it. Being the Novotel’s only bar (if you discount the one at the pool), we’d have thought there might be more interest. Hopefully it will come as despite a few niggles, we enjoy our time at Groovz.
Staff are quick to weclome us and tell us about the deals (two free drinks for ladies’ from 10pm every night and Dhs20 pints from noon until 10pm). They’re super-friendly and will be a big bonus once people start frequenting this place.
Other deals include two-for-one mixed drinks on Monday night and Asian night on a Wednesday (buckets of hops for Dhs99).
There’s karaoke on a Friday, too, and a stage for live bands, who play at the weekend.
The stage adds to the rock bar feel of the place, but strangely the music being played doesn’t really match that image. It feels like the generic chart R&B and house should be replaced by something all the more rockier.
Music aside, the atmosphere warms up slightly when a few more people come through the doors as the night progresses. Most people seem to be grabbing a bite to eat as well as drinking, so we join them by ordering some bar snacks. The food menu consists of Filipino specialities, other Asian dishes and a few more Mediterranean options.
When it comes to beverages there are plenty of hops, short drinks and mixed drinks available, so everyone should find something they like.
Our only confusion is over the soundtrack. It feels like the capital is really lacking a genuine rock bar, could Groovz be it? We look forward to finding out.
