The Hilton Abu Dhabi is almost as old as the UAE, having opened in 1973, and Jazz Bar & Dining is its stalwart nightspot. It underwent a revamp last year, introducing a new international menu that includes steaks, caviar and a ceviche of sea bass, which it calls its signature dish.
By all accounts, however, much of what makes the bar popular has stayed more or less the same. The main focus is a blue-lit stage behind the bar, and with good reason – house band DNA play from 10pm Monday to Saturday, so don’t expect to get much serious discussion in after that. While not as jazz-focused as the bar’s name might suggest, they play excellent pop, rock and funk covers. Imagine Lionel Richie and Gloria Estefan were in a band with a group of really top-notch musicians. It’s hard not to sing along, although the seating layout has not been designed with dancing in mind.
What this place does offer that is in keeping with the spirit of backstreet jazz clubs, is that it’s dimly lit with no windows, making it feel like a music den. It is easy to get caught up in the evening and forget about the world outside. And bubbly is available by the glass.
It’s obvious why this bar has lasted. It’s a great spot to leave behind the small talk and just listen to the music. The service is good and the crowd is mixed.
They also offer a generous two ladies’ nights – “girls night out” Mondays and “bubbly” Wednesdays, both offering a selection of complimentary beverages for the ladies, and all that jazz.
The bottom line
An old favourite in a sophisticated setting, but limited jazz.
