For anyone out there who was wondering if it’s possible to step back in time to 1950s New York, we have the answer. And the answer is yes, at the wonderfully old-school St. Regis Bar.
All you aspiring Don Drapers should make a beeline for this classy space, which sits off the lobby of The St. Regis Abu Dhabi. The deep walnut walls give the venue a classic gentlemen’s club vibe, with a library, cigar lounge and bar area all atmospheric and oozing charm.
As you might imagine, this is no party venue. The dress code is quite formal, with shirts and long trousers required for men and shorts, T-shirts, flip-flops and trainers not allowed at all. The vibe isn’t stuffy, though, instead it’s relaxed and grown-up. It’s absolutely the place you’d come for a late-night drink, but that shouldn’t put you off visiting earlier in the evening, too.
Drinks are also classy, the mixed beverage menu is filled with classics, including a certain tomato-based concoction that was originally created in the St. Regis New York in 1934. Scottish shorts are also order of the day here, with a long list of options, some that will require a healthy bank balance before ordering.
A short-but-sweet food menu is also available if you’re peckish (and you’ll get a very impressive selection of nuts and olives with your drinks), with an oyster deal running on Tuesdays, fondue served daily and regular themed events on the calendar, too.
While it’s a lovely venue, it’s unlikely to be one you turn to for a full night out. Pre- or post-dinner at one of the hotel’s excellent restaurants will probably suffice. But whatever the reason, we recommend it.
