NYU Abu Dhabi Art Gallery is reopening with an unparalleled collection

Explore artwork from ’60s India, Turkey and Iran

Calling all art-lovers, culture-vultures, artists and history-buffs, you’re going to love this news. NYU Abu Dhabi Art Gallery, a major gallery in the region, is reopening for the first time since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic with an exciting in-person exhibition.

The NYU Abu Dhabi Art Gallery is reopening its doors to the public on Monday November 15 with a brand new exhibition that we can’t wait to see.

We’ve missed wandering through the gallery space, which always has something unexpected to see and tonnes to read and learn about. Pro tip: take a break in the Reading Room after exploring the exhibition, or head to Blacksmith Coffee Company for an artisanal coffee.

In November, you can visit the gallery in person again to experience Modernisms: Iranian, Turkish and Indian highlights from NYU’s Abby Weed Grey Collection. You’ll find iconic painting and sculpture from the 1960s, challenging Western-centric narratives of modern art. The exhibition will remain open until February 5, 2022.

The exhibition sheds new light on famed artists such as Parviz Tanavoli, Fahrelnissa Zeid and M.F. Husain, and it also includes the collector’s personal letters, journals, invoices, catalogues, invitations and photographs from the Abby Weed Grey Papers in the NYU Archives. The archives reveal how these artists drew on their specific heritages while participating in global conversations about modernity.

Essays in the accompanying book will show you how artists of various nationalities melded local traditions with global trends during the 1960s.

The collection contributes to ongoing dialogues that help expand the canons of modern art beyond the traditional areas of North America and Europe.
